Right to Read and the Story Gifters
During December 2020, we teamed up with Millfields Inspired, the Story Gifters and the Year 1 and Year 2 children from High Street and St Peters primary schools.
The Story Gifters aim to place an abundance of excellent quality, preloved and new books into the hands of children to reduce book poverty in Plymouth. With this in mind and along with the knowledge from head teachers in Stonehouse that during the pandemic, children are missing interaction from the outside world, we hatched a plan and Our Storytelling Project was born!
Just before the children broke up for Christmas, we asked two male volunteers who were keen to be involved if they would be happy to read a story to the children via a zoom link. Before we knew it, they were zooming into the classrooms of the Year 1 and Year 2 children reading them a story. We are still not sure who enjoyed it the most as both men reported back as having a truly wonderful time and the teachers’ feedback was that the children thoroughly enjoyed it too (thanks Richard Woodland, PCC, and Alasdair Hall, Foot Anstey). The children were all delighted to receive their very own book to take home which was gifted to them by the Story Gifters. Check out their Facebook page.
This was Phase 1, completed during December 😊 and we move to Phase 2 in January 2021. Watch this space!
